Cuban delegation walks out as Trump calls country a 'failed state' at the United Nations – video | United Nations | The Guardian

Cuban officials walked out during President Trump’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, after Mr. Trump said Cuba was “an absolutely failed state” and vowed that the government “will fall.”

Cameras inside the U.N. showed four members of Cuba’s delegation stand up and head toward the exits.

“It’s an absolutely failed state,” Mr. Trump said of the island nation. “It’s failing like never before, and it will fall.” He continued, “We’ll not allow a haven for foreign adversaries to threaten America on our own doorstep.”

Mr. Trump said Marco Rubio, his secretary of state, was negotiating with Cuba, but he did not provide any details on those talks. For months, the Trump administration has exerted pressure on Cuba to comply with a set of demands.

The United States wants Cuba to liberalize its economy, open up to American businesses, buy oil from the United States and push out Russian and Chinese intelligence operatives. But so far, Cuban leaders have appeared to be unwilling to make those concessions.

Representatives of the Cuban government did not respond to a request for comment about the walkout on Tuesday, but Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s foreign minister, responded to Mr. Trump’s speech on social media.

“The US government proves incapable of accepting that #Cuba is, and has the right to be, a fully independent and sovereign country,” he wrote on X. He added, “Cuba is not a threat to the US nor to any country.”
