The decision by Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director, to step down comes after President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his intention to replace him with a longtime loyalist before Mr. Wray’s 10-year term expired. Trump’s pick for defense secretary, on Wednesday and pressed him on a range of issues, including the sexual assault allegations against him and the role of women in the military. Ms. Collins said she would wait to make a decision on whether she would support his candidacy. Mr. Hegseth said he hoped, in time, he could “earn her support.
