Sally Azar will lead the English-speaking Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem.
Sally Azar was ordained as the first female Palestinian pastor in Jerusalem by the Lutheran Church.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL) stated Azar will lead the English-speaking Church of the Redeemer congregation.
Sunday’s church ordination in occupied east Jerusalem’s Old City was packed.
“Ordination honors. My church’s female ordination is a privilege. I’m proud of my church’s heritage and gender equality. Exciting, but unclear. Azar told The Lutheran World Federation this week that she did not expect her ordination to be simple.
Azar studied Intercultural Theology at Gottingen University after graduating from the Near East School of Theology in Lebanon in 2018.
I’ll join Jerusalem’s ELCJHL English congregation. She continued, “I will also work with the youth and bridge the Arabic-English congregation.”
