The federal government has sought to bolster election security for years through a program known as the Help America Vote Act, or HAVA grants, but the wildly fluctuating funding levels have made it difficult for state officials to plan their budgets and their projects. Rising misinformation and disinformation about elections, often fueled by conspiracy theories, as well as threats against election workers, make the grants especially important, according to elections officials. But U.S. House Republicans are seeking to eliminate HAVA funding in this year’s appropriations process, a move they unsuccessfully attempted last year as well. Trump said during his first visit to Michigan since becoming a convicted felon last month that the court system in the United States is “under siege.” At a Turning Point Action conference in Detroit, he likened his conviction to claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election that have been debunked by voting officials and legislators from both parties, the court system, independent experts and members of Trump’s administration. | Michigan Advance |
