The Monterey Park ballroom dance hall gunman shot himself after murdering 10 and wounded 10.
Police found a gunman who killed 10 people at a Lunar New Year celebration in the US dead in his getaway van.
After surrounding the vehicle in Torrance, southwest of Monterey Park where the killings occurred, California police found the man on Sunday.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the suspect as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran and said he shot himself as police approached the van. Luna told reporters that no other suspects were at large and that the motive remained unclear for the attack, which wounded 10 more
The deadly shooting occurred late Saturday at a ballroom dance club on Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park, a predominantly Asian American neighborhood east of Los Angeles. Police arrived about 10:30pm local time to find individuals “pouring out of the location shouting” (06:30 GMT Sunday).
Luna claimed five males and five women died at the scene in a news conference hours after the attack. He claimed the wounded were “varying from stable to critical”. They’re unknown.
Local news footage after the shooting showed middle-aged wounded people being put into ambulances on stretchers.
The sheriff’s department published security footage of the suspect wearing glasses, a dark jacket, and a dark beanie cap with a white stripe.
Monterey Park should have celebrated the Lunar New Year with delight. Instead, they were victims of a horrible and heartless gun crime,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said.
