Matt Dolan, a Republican, Will Challenge Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio

Mr. Dolan, a state senator whose family owns the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, will compete for the Republican nomination against one of the most vulnerable Democratic senators.

Republican Ohio state senator Matt Dolan declared on Tuesday that he will run against Sherrod Brown, one of the most vulnerable Democrats in 2024, for the United States Senate.

Mr. Dolan will be running for the Senate for the second time, after finishing third in the Ohio Republican primary for an open seat last year. J.D. Vance, the winner of that primary, went on to win the general election.

His family owns the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, and he funded his first campaign with millions of dollars of his own money.

Mr. Dolan emphasised border security, inflation, and his support for the police in his campaign launch, and he accused Mr. Brown of “blind party allegiance.”

Democratic incumbents in red states Montana and West Virginia will also be up for re-election in 2024.

Mr. Brown, a three-term senator and former representative, has won difficult elections in the past, including in 2018, when he won re-election by more than six percentage points, just two years after Donald J. Trump carried Ohio by eight points.
