Live: Turkey, Syria earthquake kills thousands

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey and Syria early on Monday, killing over 1,000 people as they slept, leveling buildings, and sending shocks to Cyprus, Egypt, and Iraq. Liveblog updates from FRANCE 24.

One of the greatest earthquakes to hit Turkey in a century destroyed entire areas of major cities in a region with millions of refugees from Syria and other wars.

“The greatest earthquake recorded in the history of the centre,” said Syria’s National Earthquake Centre head Raed Ahmed on pro-government radio.

A senior health official told SANA that 473 Syrians died.
