Germany would not prohibit Poland sending tanks to Ukraine: Minister

Foreign minister Annalena Baerbock says Germany “would not stand in the way” if Poland deployed Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

Foreign minister Annalena Baerbock said Germany will authorize Poland to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine to help Kyiv resist the Russian invasion.

We are addressing this with our partners because we realize how vital these tanks are. Save lives and liberate Ukraine.”

Berlin appeared ready to authorize European countries to deliver German-made tanks to Ukraine despite rising pressure from Kyiv and allies. Germany must approve tank exports.

Ukraine has not received Western-designed main battle tanks for defense against Russian invaders.

Ukraine has repeatedly requested military aid from its Western friends. “Every delay kills Ukrainians. “Think faster,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak urged Saturday.

After 50 countries met at the US Ramstein Air Base in Germany and agreed to give Kyiv billions of euros in military hardware, including armoured vehicles and ammunition, the criticism poured.

However, Germany failed to provide the Leopard 2 combat tanks, one of the greatest in the world.

Despite heavy pressure and criticism, Germany said it has not decided whether to allow other European countries to transport German-made tanks to Ukraine.

Poland has said it is ready to deliver 14 Leopard tanks to Kyiv but Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Sunday he was waiting for “a clear statement” from Berlin whether countries who have the Leopards may transfer them to Ukraine.
